MEET THE COACHING TEAM
"I think of Jiujitsu as a craft. Something that blends artistry with practicality. There is something beautiful about a well timed movement, but there is still something functional behind it. Form and function. To that end, I believe that a craftsman is interested in all areas of his or her craft. I think that studying a thing deeply yields a real understanding of your art and hopefully, after time, a chance to contribute to the art as a whole."
- JOSH VOGEL, Co- Founder

JOSH VOGEL
Co-Founder, Head Instructor
3rd Degree Black Belt
Josh began training Jiu Jitsu in 2003, and like most beginners, spent two years on the bottom on side control, smashed. Because of his prior martial arts background, he had a deep belief in technical prowess and relaxation over untrained strength, and so he worked very hard to understand how the body works, how the techniques of Jiu Jitsu work, and how it could be that someone with lesser physical abilities could defeat someone without those limitations.
This led him to explore competitive Jiu Jitsu
(with most recent medals at 2022 Pans and D.C. Open),
the self defense aspects of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, and the broad, creative array of techniques that Jiu Jitsu provides. As he continues in Jiu Jitsu, he still studies daily in the form of training with his Jiu Jitsu family at JJC, studying video, as well as branching out into the larger world of movement to see what lessons he can bring back to make his teaching and understanding more effective.

ANGIE VOGEL
Co-Founder, COO, Coach
1st Degree Black Belt
Angie has been training Jiu Jitsu since 2012, and jokingly
(or not?) Josh describes her as "patient zero" for the organized teaching methodology used at JJC. Using that systematic approach, and a strong work ethic, she was able to earn her Black Belt in 7 years (compared to the typical 10-12). This approach to Jiu Jitsu has not only given her an understanding of how to execute for herself, but a pathway for growth in her own teaching.
Angie also trained in Muay Thai for 9 years, earning her
"shorts" in 2013, and instructor certification in 2017.
As COO, she is responsible for the day to day business operations, bringing a no-nonsense, transparent approach that is refreshing in the Martial Arts industry.
When she isn't training, teaching, or on-boarding new students, she is most likely designing the merchandise for the academy or creating content for our social media accounts.
