Paul Rivera

BJJ Rank: Brown Belt
Years Training: 25+
Classes Taught: Fundamentals
Paul began his Jiu Jitsu journey back in 1999, looking for something fun to stay in shape. With a background in high school wrestling, he missed the intensity of grappling and the friendships that come from being part of a team. Jiu Jitsu brought that back—and opened the door to a lifelong practice.
Over the years, Paul has trained at five different academies. While each played a role in his development, he credits The Jiu Jitsu Company with having the biggest impact on his growth:
“JJC’s technical teaching model helped improve my Jiu Jitsu and fix some bad habits. I always say I wish I started here as a white belt.”
Paul’s favorite aspect of teaching is guiding students through the fundamentals. He’s especially known for his precise, pressure-based guard passing—particularly Toreando-style passes that blend control with movement.
For Paul, the ideal student is simply someone who’s willing to learn—even when it’s not easy. His coaching is driven by patience, clarity, and the quiet satisfaction of helping others grow on the mat.

Paul is available for private lessons.
