Your first day at The Jiu Jitsu Co.

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions on what to expect on your first day of training at The Jiu Jitsu Company.

Q: What do I have to do before I come in?

A: Firstly, you can either call us, or book online for your free trial week. Be sure to enter a valid email and phone number so we can reach out. You will receive the waivers (Covid/General Liability/Photo release) via "Dotted Sign" App, and you will need to sign those, as well as send a photo of your current vaccine card via text.

Q: What should I wear?

A: If you are coming in for a fundamentals class and haven't trained before, you may wear comfortable exercise clothes like yoga pants, shorts, and a tee shirt. Your instructor will modify the curriculum for you if the class is a Gi specific technique. Once you are an enrolled member you will be expected to wear your uniform to class, which consists of a Jiu Jitsu Gi and belt, with either a T shirt, or rash guard underneath.

If you are coming for the intermediate classes (previous experience) you should wear the appropriate uniform for class Gi or Nogi. Please be aware we do not allow Vale tudo style shorts, bare chests (including under your Gi) or sports bras with no shirts. You may also bring flip flops for the bathrooms.

The hygiene expectation are cleanliness and trimmed nails, but they are listed more specifically in the changing area of JJC.

Q: Then What?

A: When you arrive, you will be greeted and checked in by Angie or Josh (owners) and given a tour of our school. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have!

Q: What should I expect from a class?

A: Don't worry even if you are a complete beginner! Fundamentals classes designed to be clear and simple with attentive instructors and helpful training partners to guide you. Classes will typically start with the techniques we are working on for the week, which is followed by safe opportunities for sparring so you can learn to apply the techniques right away! Again, feel free to ask questions of the instructors if you need clarification. Be patient with yourself, Jiu Jitsu can be a difficult (yet rewarding) practice, and typically no one gets it all right on the first day.

If you feel more comfortable watching a class before you participate let us know! We are happy to accommodate.

Q: What do I do after class?

A: You are welcome to use our showers and bathroom amenities should you wish after class! Once you are changed, you will have another opportunity to ask any questions about pricing or training you have. All of our pricing options are available online, but if you haven't seen them or have questions beyond that please ask.

Q: Can I try a whole week?

A: Yes! We encourage everyone to take advantage of the whole week for a few reasons. You can experience a variety of instructors, meet different people, and experience the school as if you already train here! This is a great way to get a full sampling of the culture of the school to make sure we are a good fit for you. This also gives US a chance to get to know you, and make sure you are a good fit for us too!

Q: What do I do if I'm ready to sign up?

A: You can see Angie in the office once you're ready. The paperwork takes a few minutes, but after that you'll be a full fledged member.

Q: What if I hate it?

A: We'll be sorry to see you go, but we understand it isn't for everyone! We do follow up if we don't hear from you, so if there is any feedback you wish to provide, we are happy to receive it.

We hope this Q&A clears up any unanswered questions you may have about trying out Jiu Jitsu. Comment any questions I may have left unanswered. See you on the mat!
